A little while ago I had a medical procedure that put me into menopause. Not gradually, just, one day I wasn't, and then I was.
I didn't think too much about what that might mean for my hair. I had other things going on. But over the following weeks and months, I started to notice things. My hair felt a bit different. A bit finer. A little less cooperative than usual. The kind of change that creeps up on you slowly enough that you almost talk yourself out of it, is it just the weather? Am I imagining this?
I wasn't imagining it.
What's actually going on
When oestrogen drops, hair tends to spend less time in its growth phase. The result is usually gradual, finer strands, a bit more shedding than you're used to, less volume, more fragility. For some women it's barely noticeable. For others it's one of the more confronting parts of the whole menopause experience.
Either way, it's incredibly common and it doesn't get talked about nearly enough.
What helped
Once I actually paid attention and started being consistent with the right products, things genuinely improved. The range I kept coming back to, and now recommend all the time to clients going through something similar, is Kérastase Genesis.
It's designed specifically for hair that's weakened and prone to falling. It strengthens the hair fibre, reduces breakage, and makes a noticeable difference to how your scalp feels over time. The home care duo (shampoo and fondant/masque) is a great starting point, and if you're noticing more significant thinning, our in-salon Genesis treatment takes things a step further.
It won't turn back the clock, but it does make a real difference to the hair you have now, and that's worth a lot.
